Distance & Drive Time

The road distance from Makkah to Madinah is approximately 450 km via Highway 60 (Makkah–Madinah Expressway). By private car, the journey takes 4 to 4.5 hours under normal traffic. During Ramadan and the Hajj season (Dhul Hijja), allow up to 5 hours.

The Route Overview

The Makkah–Madinah Expressway passes through the western Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia. The highway is dual carriageway throughout, well-maintained, and patrolled by Saudi Highway Police. Speed limits are strictly enforced — our drivers comply with all traffic regulations.

Roughly halfway along the route, the road passes near Badr — the site of the historic Battle of Badr. This is the most requested stop for pilgrims on this route. A 30–45 minute detour allows you to visit the battlefield and graves of the Badr martyrs.

Why Private Car Over the Haramain Train?

The Haramain High-Speed Railway is fast, but requires a taxi from your hotel to Makkah train station (20–30 minutes), check-in, the train journey, then another taxi from Madinah station to your hotel (15–20 minutes). Total: 3+ hours plus station stress and luggage handling twice.

A private car goes door-to-door — hotel lobby to hotel lobby — in 4.5 hours. No stations, no luggage handling, no sharing with strangers. For families with children, elderly pilgrims, or groups with substantial luggage, private transfer is significantly more comfortable.

Best Departure Times

• After Fajr (4–5am): Traffic is lightest. Arrive Madinah before midday.
• After Dhuhr (1–2pm): Standard daytime departure. Arrive late afternoon for Asr.
• After Asr (4–5pm): Aim to arrive before Isha. Avoid Maghrib traffic near Makkah.
• Avoid peak Friday times and the hours immediately before Ramadan Iftaar.
